Sur Energy and OpenAI plan Stargate Argentina

October 10, 2025  -  Today, Sur Energy and OpenAI come together to announce plans for the development of Stargate Argentina, a pioneering AI infrastructure project which would place Argentina at the forefront of the global artificial intelligence ecosystem.

The companies have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to collaborate on a large-scale data center project capable of hosting the next generation of AI computing and reaching up to 500MW capacity. This will be the first Stargate project in Latin America, aimed at driving AI-powered growth while generating economic and social benefits, as well as equitable access to this transformative technology.

“This milestone is about more than just infrastructure. It's about putting AI into the hands of people across Argentina,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.

Sur Energy is the energy and infrastructure developer behind Stargate Argentina. The company will lead the project’s implementation, ensuring that the data-center ecosystem is powered by secure, efficient, and sustainable sources. Structured within the framework of RIGI, the project will involve up to $25 billion in investment at full scale, positioning it as one of the largest technology and energy-infrastructure initiatives in Argentina’s history. The investment will be deployed through a joint venture between Sur Energy and a top-tier cloud-infrastructure developer. OpenAI welcomes the opportunity to become an offtaker.

In addition, the partnership is seeking to enable OpenAI technology adoption across Argentina, as part of the OpenAI for Countries initiative, starting with the government. The technology is expected to help employees in Argentine government, administration and research institutions accelerate their daily work, ultimately saving costs while delivering better services to Argentinian citizens.
